The road that leads to Rome

No two cities, supply chains, or businesses are the same. Each comes with its unique context, quirks, and challenges, and each requires a slightly different approach to transition to a circular state.

Because there is no universal blueprint to circularity, we work with changemakers within a wide range of organisations – from SMEs and multinational corporations to municipalities – to identify the right opportunities for them and develop practical strategies to close the circularity gap for their context.

We pride ourselves in our approach, which is anchored in trust, collaboration, and innovation, and always strive to make a difference on the ground.

Head in the clouds, feet on the ground.

THE ISSUE

While city officials and other urban change-makers find the circular economy promise attractive for their cities and their citizens, they often need guidance as to where to start. Which strategies does it make the most sense to encourage? In which sectors? How?

THE RESPONSE

The Circle City Scan is a visual roadmap that identifies tailored opportunities to foster a circular economy based on each city’s context, and presents practical strategies within sectors that have the biggest transformational potential.

OUR ROLE

Through our work with cities and regions, we have developed a collaborative innovation process to collect, analyse, and create easy-to-digest visuals of a city’s resource consumption, while bringing together and guiding a community of local businesses and city officials to co-create practical circular strategies for the city.

Towards an inclusive, circular vision for Prague

The Prague Circle City Scan highlighted the potential for the city to use public procurement to promote circular lifestyles in ReUse Hubs and boost the construction; and to utilise the city’s food waste as biomethane to power the city’s waste collection fleet. To capitalise on the growing circular momentum in the city, we also provided tangible steps to take these projects from concept to reality and kick-start Prague’s circular transition, available in this report.

Circular Cities Switzerland

The Circular Cities Switzerland project covered four cities: Bern, Basel, Geneva, and Lausanne. It aimed to expand the breadth and depth of the circular economy dialogue in Switzerland. It focused on the development of tangible circular strategies, and these so-called “lighthouse projects” will demonstrate the economic, social and environmental benefits of the circular economy and accelerate the narrative at a national level.

Scaling impact in Catalonia

The Àmbit B-30 region in Catalonia is one of the key industrial hubs for innovation, knowledge, technology, and research in Southern Europe. The region also stands out for the opportunities it holds for industrial symbiosis and the reuse of by-products as secondary materials.

To tap into these opportunities, we trained our local sister organisation Inédit to execute our Circle Scan methodology. Working with 23 local governments in the B30 innovation area, we co-created a practical and scalable circular vision and roadmap for implementation. The innovation process focused on the analysis of the chemicals, packaging, metallurgy, and agri-food sectors. The results? We identified 16 circular strategies with high potential for local implementation and scalability, including bioplastics, metals passports, design for dismantling and remanufacturing, and the re-mining of high value metals.

Detailed results to be shared soon!

What’s
next?

We continue to refine and standardise our methodology, and are looking forward to working with local partners to bring Circle City Scans to new contexts. Reach out today at cities@circle-economy.com to explore opportunities for your own city!
